features new pieces written expressly for him by: Shulamit Ran
(Pulitzer Prize winner), Bruce Saylor, (Distinguished Composer City
University of NY) Pieter Snapper (Composer in Residence, MIAM
Istanbul, Turkey), Augusta Read Thomas (Chicago Symphony Composer in
Residence), and Andrew MacDonald (Juno Award winning Canadian
composer). Reviews in the official journal of the International
Clarinet association regarding the premiere recording Three
Scenes for Solo Clarinet by Shulamit Ran state, "The
performance of this work is exceptional. Campbell's tone, phrasing
and dynamic contrast really portray the essence of this piece, a work
which will most likely become a standard in the clarinet
repertoire." The Clarinet, September 2001.
About Campbell's
world premiere recording of Augusta Read Thomas' from Icarus
with GustO the ICA journal writes "The
musicianship and clarinet playing are superb."
Campbell's
commissions demonstrate both his virtuosic capacity for the entire
gamut of musical styles and his dedication to building the
repertoire. The range of works written for him is vast. He has
successfully premiered everything from the intensely avant-garde to
popular jazz works. His work as a jazz musician during his student
days allows him to include improvisatory works in his repertoire. He
has worked with several electro-acoustic composers and is currently
planning an entire CD of electro-acoustic works.
Campbell is
committed to supporting worthy new works beyond their debut. He has
taken pieces written for him around the globe, with acclaimed
premiere performances and broadcasts in France, Italy, Germany,
Hungary, Lithuania, Estonia, China, and Turkey as well as, of course,
throughout the US and Canada. He has introduced new music at several
key festivals and has performed featured recitals of new works at the
International Clarinet Festival in Washington DC, at the Atlanta
Clarinet Association Festival, and at the Oklahoma Clarinet
Symposium. Several works written for Campbell have been performed by
other artists at major conventions, have been the topic of doctoral
projects at various universities, and have an established place in
the clarinetists' professional recital repertoire.
Campbell's work
with new American Music was recognized with the prestigious American
Artist Abroad Award. His first tour to Turkey was under the auspices
of the United States Department of State and he was also a featured
honored guest of the United States Embassy in Budapest, Hungary. In
addition to his critically acclaimed CD Premieres! on Gasparo
Records, Campbell's new music recordings are also featured on Music
from the Third Practice, Centaur Records, and Music
from the ICA published by the International Clarinet Society. |
